Field Practicum - Preschool CECS-106

Course Name: Field Practicum - Preschool
Course Number: CECS-106
Category: Child & Family Studies
Description The learning that takes place in field practicum is the essence of the Early Childhood Education Program at Centennial College. Assigned to a preschool childcare setting and working under the direction of a Registered Early Childhood Educator, students will have the opportunity to experience first-hand what they have been learning in the classroom. By taking risks, extending themselves and trying out new skills, students will learn from both their successes and their mistakes. While developing and trying out new skills, students will consolidate information learned in their academic classes and compare theory with the realities of working with young children and their families. Faculty supervisors, who will visit agencies at pre-arranged times, will observe students in action with the children, confirm strengths and needs, and offer suggestions to support their reflective practice. Final grades will be assigned based upon the competencies and grading system outlined in the field manual
Notes Notes:

1. This is a planned experience of 25 days (eight hours per day) with one five day block if possible in a Centennial College approved field setting under supervision, plus six hours of seminars. Once registered, please e-mail Lynn Haines at lhaines@centennial college.ca to arrange your placement. All students are required to attend the first Seminar Class for Field Orientation or you will not be able to start your placement this semester (all seminars are mandatory for success).

2. A current Police Reference Check, Medical and First-Aid/CPR Certificate are required for the Practicum. Please obtain before class begins and bring to the first Seminar.

3. If you have successfully completed two practicums (A grade or better with a B+ grade point average) and have at least two years work experience in a licensed child care setting, you may be eligible to register for Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition. Please make an appointment with the Program Supervisor to discuss this.
