Description	Preparation for Professional Practice is designed to support students in their development of a child and youth care professional identity. Students will learn about the history of legislation impacting Child and Youth Care practice in Ontario. Students will be provided with opportunities to discuss current professional issues, future trends (including social media), and challenges in the field of child and youth care. In this course students will identify relevant professional codes of ethics (such as those of the Ontario Association of Child and Youth Care) as well as professional standards consistent with the protection and maintenance of confidentiality and associated rights for children, youth, and families. Students will understand where child and youth care practitioners work and learn how to interact in a professional manner as recommended by professional competencies, current legislation affecting services, and organizational policies and procedures. Students will determine what reasonable grounds to suspect when a child is at risk for abuse or neglect and may be in need of protection, and take appropriate action in reporting these incidents in accordance with the Ontario Child and Family Services Act, 2017. Through self-awareness and self-reflection, students will articulate their strengths and areas for growth to create personal and professional SMART goals for their learning and future success. Finally, students will build capacity for the use of tools and resources to professionally share their achievements. This will include a focus on self-care, time management, organization, and documentation of education and experiences that will support their future career aspirations.
