This course focuses on specific teaching strategies prospective ESL instructors must have to effectively teach the four learning skills (listening, reading, speaking, and writing). Participants design authentic communicative materials that develop their students' accuracy and fluency in English and increase their confidence as they convey their ideas effectively. This course emphasizes the integration of the four learning skills in several ways to resemble natural interactions in the real world, the use of technology and online resources as well as feedback and error correction in the classroom. This course also contains a pronunciation and grammar teaching component that combines theory and practice, and their assimilation to the four learning skills. Course Learning Outcomes The student will reliably demonstrate the ability to: 1. Identify different proficiency levels of listening, reading, speaking and writing. 2. Recognize and resolve classroom management challenges and language learning issues. 3. Create authentic, communicative, integrated, and level appropriate lesson plans. 4. Apply suitable techniques to teaching pronunciation and grammar to diverse learners. 5. Use appropriate strategies for developing fluency and accuracy in the classroom. 6. Although specific days and times may appear on the online schedule, TESL 205 is asynchronous, so you can log in whenever you have time and work at your own pace as long as you complete all required weekly discussions and occasional assignments each week. This course will require you to spend at least 4 to 6 hours weekly for its duration. TESL 205 is delivered in an online format which requires a working computer with a working keyboard, mouse, headphones, and a reliable internet connection for access to eCentennial (Centennial College's web-based learning system) and the other EdTech tools found in this course. You are responsible for ensuring that your computer system meets the necessary minimum system requirements, as described above. Make sure to update your browser to the most recent version. Pre-Requisites: TESL 101, 102, 103, 104, 202, and 204.
