To obtain a driving instructors licence in Ontario, you must successfully complete a Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO)-approved training course. Defensive Driving course and the Highway Traffic Act course. To qualify for a licence, both parts must be successfully completed consecutively. The course, both in-car, and in-class, totals 130 hours.

Applicants must have four or more years of valid driving experience (not classed as novice in Ontario). Prior to registering for this course please go to the nearest Driver Examination Centre and obtain a Driving Instructor Kit complying with all requirements. YOU HAVE ONE YEAR TO COMPLETE THE MTO SECTION AFTER COMPLETING THE COURSE

Once you complete your studies, you will have knowledge of:

• Instructor code of conduct;
• Legislation (H.T.A);
• Principles of learning and instruction;
• Lesson planning;
• Rules of the road;
• Vehicle handling.
