Description Course Description:

This course provides the foundations for teaching English as a Second Language (ESL). Students study the history and nature of language as well as the process of language acquisition, culture, and identity. This theoretical knowledge is applied to develop lesson plans based on needs assessment and curriculum learning outcomes.

Course Learning Outcomes:

The student will reliably demonstrate the ability to:
1. Explain the role of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) in the teaching of ESL.
2. Examine the history and nature of languages and the process of language acquisition.
3. Identify effective strategies and approaches for teaching listening, speaking, reading, and writing to ESL learners.
4. Discuss various theoretical approaches and methodologies to teaching English as a second or foreign language.
5. Facilitate needs assessment that aligns with adult learning theory and principles in the adult classroom.
6. Create ESL lesson plans based on learner needs assessment and curriculum learning outcomes.

Although specific days and times may appear on the online schedule, TESL 101 is asynchronous, so you can log in whenever you have time and work at your own pace as long as you complete all required weekly discussions and occasional assignments each week. This course will require you to spend at least 4 to 6 hours weekly for its duration.

TESL 101 is delivered in an online format which requires a working computer with a working keyboard, mouse, headphones, and a reliable internet connection for access to eCentennial (Centennial College's web-based learning system) and the other EdTech tools found in this course. You are responsible for ensuring that your computer system meets the necessary minimum system requirements, as described above. Make sure to update your browser to the most recent version.

Pre-Requisites:

Not applicable. You may register for TESL101 and 102 simultaneously.
