Description: | This course will assist the student in gaining an overview of the pharmacology of psychoactive drugs and the effects of psychiatric medications and substance use on the brain and body. The structure and function of the central nervous system will be examined, with a focus on effects and side effects of various psychoactive drugs. The student will examine therapeutic drug classifications and explore the needs of clients who are taking prescribed medications and also have substance use problems. The course covers the most common interactions between psychiatric medications and substances of abuse. This course has been approved for study credit by the Canadian Addiction Counsellors Certification Federation (CACCF).
