Description Course Description:

This course provides students with a practical framework for teaching ESL, including learning and teaching styles, language immersion, teaching beginners and multi-level classes, classroom management, evaluation and testing as well as using technology and other resources/materials. In addition, students design and deliver lessons to their peers and receive feedback.

Course Learning Outcomes:

The student will reliably demonstrate the ability to:
1. Plan communicative lessons for a variety of ESL levels.
2. Recognize appropriate teaching and learning styles in ESL.
3. Use effective evaluation and testing strategies with ESL learners.
4. Identify and overcome classroom management challenges in ESL settings.
5. Create an inclusive, engaging learning environment using adequate classroom management techniques.
6. Provide constructive and timely feedback to lesson plans and peer-delivered lessons.

Notes Notes:

Although specific days and times may appear on the online schedule, TESL 103 is asynchronous, so you can log in whenever you have time and work at your own pace as long as you complete all required weekly discussions and occasional assignments each week. This course will require you to spend at least 4 to 6 hours weekly for its duration.

TESL 103 is delivered in an online format which requires a working computer with a working keyboard, mouse, headphones, and a reliable internet connection for access to eCentennial (Centennial College's web-based learning system) and the other EdTech tools found in this course. You are responsible for ensuring that your computer system meets the necessary minimum system requirements, as described above. Make sure to update your browser to the most recent version.
