Description The first part of this course will offer students an overview of the most common governmental, legal and administrative systems encountered in the addictions field, with specific focus given to the criminal justice system, Children's Aid Society, housing, the addiction treatment system and Ontario Works/Ontario Disability Support Programs. The second part of the course will offer students a chance to focus on a select population of interest to them, or which has been identified as a service-gap in treatment and intervention. Students will complete the course with skills in effective systems navigation of select governmental, legal and administrative systems, including: referrals, (mandatory) reporting, intake and discharge processes, relevant policies and procedures, appropriate support based on client treatment plan, as well as limits and scope of advocacy. In the second half of the course, students will learn the needs and barriers to support of a specific population, and knowledge of evidence based care and treatment practices for the selected population, including micro and macro level interventions.
