Description Course Description:

This course provides students with an introductory knowledge of the grammatical structures of English, including morphology, syntax, and verb systems. Students learn techniques for teaching grammatical concepts for all levels of ESL proficiency from basic to advanced including the necessary metalanguage to explain grammatical concepts.

Course Learning Outcomes:

The student will reliably demonstrate the ability to:
1. Use pedagogical grammar as a resource to teach language forms and functions.
2. Explain the English morphological and syntactic systems such as word classes, verb tenses, coordination, and subordination.
3. Elicit appropriate self-correction strategies to help learners develop grammatical accuracy.
4. Create lesson plans for teaching grammar in a communicative context.
5. Describe the different levels of linguistic analysis such as the phonological, morphological, syntactic, semantic, pragmatic and discourse levels.
6. Discuss pedagogical grammar teaching issues and elicit feasible ways to solve it.

Notes Notes:

Although specific days and times may appear on the online schedule, TESL 102 is asynchronous, so you can log in whenever you have time and work at your own pace as long as you complete all required weekly discussions and occasional assignments each week. This course will require you to spend at least 4 to 6 hours weekly for its duration.

TESL 102 is delivered in an online format which requires a working computer with a working keyboard, mouse, headphones, and a reliable internet connection for access to eCentennial (Centennial College's web-based learning system) and the other EdTech tools found in this course. You are responsible for ensuring that your computer system meets the necessary minimum system requirements, as described above. Make sure to update your browser to the most recent version.

Pre-Requisites:
TESL 101. You may register for TESL 101 and 102 simultaneously.
