| Description | This course introduces students to the current issues in relation to First Peoples in Canada. The course allows students to explore First Peoples lived experiences, identity, values, and beliefs, through stories, art, music and song. Topics will include: IdleNoMore, the First Nations Education Act, the Tsilhqot'in Nation & Northern Gateway Pipeline, the Highway of Tears, the Sixties Scoop, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and residential schools.
The student will reliably demonstrate the ability to: 1. Explore the First Peoples culture, history, and traditions through the use of stories. 2. Understand the current social and political landscape as it relates to First Peoples. 3. Introduce the impact of treaties, legislations, and governmental policies on First Peoples' communities. 4. Reflect critically on issues pertaining to First Peoples, considering different perspectives, identities, and historical roots. |
