Description Course Description:

This course focuses on the assessment and evaluation process in ESL. Students study level assessment and principles of second language testing, including the Portfolio-Based Language Assessment (PBLA) and the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) as references for classroom assessment and evaluation tools. Finally, students learn how to design level and skill appropriate tests and understand how standardized tests work.

Course Learning Outcomes:

The student will reliably demonstrate the ability to:
1. Define level assessment.
2. Use effective assessment and evaluation strategies.
3. Develop and apply assessment and evaluation instruments to measure proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing.
4. Explain the principles of assessment and evaluation in the ESL classroom.
5. Explain the use of the Portfolio-Based Language Assessment (PBLA) and the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) in assessing and evaluating ESL students.
6. Describe the use and validity of standardized testing.

Notes Notes:

Although specific days and times may appear on the online schedule, TESL 204 is asynchronous, so you can log in whenever you have time and work at your own pace as long as you complete all required weekly discussions and occasional assignments each week. This course will require you to spend at least 4 to 6 hours weekly for its duration.

TESL 204 is delivered in an online format which requires a working computer with a working keyboard, mouse, headphones, and a reliable internet connection for access to eCentennial (Centennial College's web-based learning system) and the other EdTech tools found in this course. You are responsible for ensuring that your computer system meets the necessary minimum system requirements, as described above. Make sure to update your browser to the most recent version.

Pre-Requisites:
TESL 101, 102, 103, and 104.
