Description Course Description:

This course provides understanding of the socio-cultural and socio-political dimensions of teaching ESL. Students learn about the stages of acculturation, different learning styles, and their influence in second language acquisition and literacy. Other major topics for this course include cultural identity in Canada and other countries, major barriers that prevent immigrants from interacting in diverse societies including Canada. Finally, the course explores strategies to foster an inclusive understanding of cultural education in an ESL learning context.

Course Learning Outcomes:

The student will reliably demonstrate the ability to:
1. Describe the nature and effects of linguistic and inclusive learning in Canadian society and worldwide.
2. Explain the socio-political and socio-linguistic dimensions of teaching ESL.
3. Identify issues of acculturation faced by new immigrants in Canada and worldwide.
4. Explain the goals of culturally inclusive education in the ESL classroom.
5. Implement strategies to foster an inclusive learning environment in the ESL classroom.
6. Discuss the various roles culture plays in Second Language Acquisition and Literacy.

Although specific days and times may appear on the online schedule, TESL 202 is asynchronous, so you can log in whenever you have time and work at your own pace as long as you complete all required weekly discussions and occasional assignments each week. This course will require you to spend at least 4 to 6 hours weekly for its duration.

TESL 202 is delivered in an online format which requires a working computer with a working keyboard, mouse, headphones, and a reliable internet connection for access to eCentennial (Centennial College's web-based learning system) and the other EdTech tools found in this course. You are responsible for ensuring that your computer system meets the necessary minimum system requirements, as described above. Make sure to update your browser to the most recent version.

TESL 101, 102, 103, and 104.
